OUR DATA

From fragmented offers to a clearer market

VintWire collects publicly available wine offers from across the UK merchant market, organises them around consistent wine identities and turns those observations into information that can be compared over time.

OUR APPROACH

Good market intelligence starts with understanding the data

The UK wine market contains a remarkable amount of information. The difficulty is that much of it exists separately across individual merchant websites, offers and communications.

The same wine can be described differently from one merchant to the next. Prices can be quoted on different bases. Bottle and case formats vary. Availability changes. Offers appear and disappear.

VintWire's job is to turn as much of that fragmented information as possible into a structured and comparable view of the market.

That requires more than collecting prices. It requires identifying what is actually being offered, determining when listings refer to the same wine and preserving the distinctions that matter when comparing them.

We believe the methodology behind that information should be understandable too.

THE PRINCIPLE
Comparison is useful only when we have sufficient confidence about what is being compared.

Where VintWire cannot establish that confidence, our preference is to hold an observation back rather than create a comparison we cannot support.

COLLECTION

What VintWire collects

Our starting point is the commercial information merchants make publicly available about wines they are offering.

Wine identity

Producer, wine name, vintage and other identifying information that helps establish which wine a merchant listing represents.

Format

Bottle size, case configuration and other format information where it is available and relevant to comparison.

Offer price

The merchant's observed offer price, together with relevant information about how that price is presented where our source provides it.

Availability

Information indicating whether a wine is being offered, together with relevant availability or delivery information where this can be observed reliably.

Merchant identity

The merchant making the offer and, where possible, a stable identity for the merchant's individual listing.

Source information

Information required to maintain and verify the relationship between a VintWire observation and the merchant source from which it originated.

COVERAGE

We are building a comparable market, not a catalogue of every bottle

Wine has an exceptionally long tail. The UK market includes widely distributed wines alongside tiny allocations, merchant exclusives, mature parcels, unusual formats and bottles that may appear only once.

VintWire does not attempt to collect every wine sold by every merchant.

We are principally interested in the part of the market where aggregation can create useful comparison. That means we tend to focus on wines and offers with the potential to appear across more than one merchant.

A wine does not need to have multiple current sellers in order to appear on VintWire. The distinction is about the kind of market we are building, not a rule requiring a particular number of merchants.

Merchant coverage is also currently influenced by practical considerations: whether publicly available offers can be accessed, interpreted and structured reliably by our systems.

Inclusion is not an endorsement. Absence is not a judgement. Coverage will continue to develop.

WINE IDENTITY

Recognising the same wine across different merchants

Before prices can be compared, VintWire has to establish what each merchant is actually offering.

There is no universal way in which UK merchants describe wine.

A producer may be abbreviated by one merchant and written in full by another. Appellations, vineyards, cuvées and classifications can appear in different orders. Accents and punctuation vary. Some merchants include regional information in a title while others omit it.

A simple text comparison is therefore not enough.

VintWire organises merchant listings around a canonical wine catalogue: a consistent internal representation of the wine identities we recognise.

Merchant listings can then be associated with that identity while retaining their own commercial information, including vintage, format, price and merchant-specific listing details.

Where reliable external identifiers or other strong identity evidence are available, they can help support that process. They do not remove the need to preserve the distinctions that matter.

FAILING CLOSED

Uncertainty should not become false precision.

Where a listing cannot be connected to a wine identity with sufficient confidence, VintWire can hold it out of the comparable dataset while it is reviewed. A missing comparison is preferable to a confident-looking comparison between the wrong wines.

COMPARISON

Comparing like with like

Matching the wine is only the first step. A useful price comparison also depends on the commercial unit being compared.

Vintage

Different vintages are different markets. VintWire does not treat two vintages as interchangeable simply because the producer and wine name are the same.

Bottle size

A standard bottle, half bottle, magnum and larger format are distinct commercial units and should not be compared as though they were identical.

Case configuration

Merchant prices may relate to individual bottles, six-bottle cases, twelve-bottle cases or other configurations. The basis of the offer matters.

Tax and duty

In-bond and duty-paid prices are not automatically equivalent. Where the basis of a price can be identified reliably, that distinction should be preserved.

Availability

A headline price is less useful if the wine is no longer available. VintWire's view of the market therefore depends on maintaining the current state of observed offers as well as their price.

Commercial terms

Delivery timing, minimum quantities and other merchant conditions can affect the practical meaning of an offer even where the underlying wine and headline price are the same.

BEST PRICE

What “Best Price” means on VintWire

Best Price identifies the lowest relevant offer currently identified by VintWire within the merchant data we track for the corresponding wine, vintage and comparable format.

It is a statement about VintWire's observed market.

It is not a claim that no lower price exists anywhere else in the UK, internationally, through a private allocation, on another trading venue or from a merchant that VintWire does not currently track.

Nor does the lowest headline price necessarily make an offer the right choice for every buyer. Availability, tax status, delivery timing, case configuration, merchant relationship and other commercial terms can matter too.

CURRENT MARKET

A continuously changing dataset

VintWire is designed to provide a current view of the offers and activity we observe across the UK wine market.

We regularly collect and update information from the merchants and sources we track. When an offer changes, appears or disappears, subsequent observations allow VintWire's view of that market to change too.

This is important because stale information can be as misleading as incorrect information. Maintaining a market dataset therefore involves both discovering new offers and reconciling offers that are no longer present.

No collection system can control the source itself. Merchant websites change, pages become unavailable, technical interruptions occur and source information can contain errors or delays.

VintWire therefore aims for timely and accurate market information without pretending that third-party commercial information can be guaranteed at every moment.

PRICE MOVEMENTS

Observing change, not inventing a valuation

When VintWire identifies a price movement, it means that relevant merchant offer data observed by VintWire has changed.

That is useful information, but it is important to understand what it does and does not establish.

An individual merchant changing an asking price does not necessarily mean that the underlying market value of the wine has moved by the same amount. Equally, an unchanged asking price does not prove that the wider market has remained unchanged.

The analytical value comes from observing these changes across merchants, wines and time. Together, those observations can reveal patterns that are difficult to see when every merchant is viewed separately.

HISTORY

What historical prices represent

Historical observations can show how merchant asking prices have developed, but they should not be confused with completed trades.

Unless explicitly stated otherwise, historical prices on VintWire represent merchant offer prices observed by VintWire.

They record what was being offered in the sources we tracked at the time of observation.

They do not necessarily establish that a transaction took place at that price.

Historical merchant offers should therefore not be interpreted automatically as completed transaction prices, executable bids, formal valuations or proof of the price at which a wine could have been bought or sold at a particular moment.

AN IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
An observed offer is evidence about the market. It is not, by itself, the market value of the wine.
LIMITATIONS

What the data cannot tell you

Transparency about limitations makes the information more useful, not less.

It is not every offer everywhere

VintWire tracks a growing selection of merchants and sources. An offer not appearing on VintWire may still exist elsewhere.

It is not a record of every transaction

Merchant asking prices do not tell us whether a sale occurred, the final negotiated price or the volume traded.

It is not a formal valuation

Observed prices can inform an understanding of a market but do not constitute a valuation of an individual bottle, collection or portfolio.

It is not guaranteed availability

Stock can sell, allocations can close and merchants can change their offers. Final availability must be confirmed with the merchant.

It cannot eliminate source errors

Information published by third parties may itself be incomplete, delayed or incorrect. VintWire cannot guarantee information it does not control.

It does not replace the merchant's terms

Before purchasing, users should confirm the final price, availability, tax or duty treatment, delivery and other applicable terms directly with the relevant merchant.

CORRECTIONS

If something looks wrong, tell us

A large and changing market dataset will never improve by pretending errors cannot occur.

If you identify a wine, merchant, price, format or other piece of information that appears incorrect, we want to know about it.

Please include the relevant VintWire page or merchant source where possible so that we can investigate the observation and, where appropriate, correct it.

A DEVELOPING DATASET

Coverage should become more useful as VintWire grows

VintWire's market coverage is not static.

We expect to add merchants, expand the information we can observe from existing merchants, improve wine identification and develop new ways of interpreting the accumulated market history.

That does not change the underlying principle: expansion should improve the quality of the market view, not come at the expense of confidence in what is being compared.

The objective is not the largest possible pile of listings. It is an increasingly useful representation of the comparable UK wine market.

THE UK WINE MARKET, SYNTHESISED

The data is the beginning, not the conclusion.

VintWire brings fragmented merchant information together so that prices, availability and market changes can be seen in context — and then used as the foundation for genuinely independent analysis.
